Sandalwood Double Statue of Mephistopheles & Margaretta

Artist: Mohit Jangid
Material: Single Block Sandalwood
Size: 2 feet (24 inches)
Origin: Jaipur, Rajasthan
Inspiration: Goethe’s Faust – Symbolic Duality of Good and Evil

Artistic & Cultural Description:

This 2-foot-tall double-sided sandalwood sculpture is a rare and iconic representation of Mephistopheles and Margaretta, inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust. It is carved from a single block of pure Indian sandalwood by internationally recognized master artist Mohit Jangid, blending Western literary themes with traditional Indian miniature carving craftsmanship.

The statue is an artistic dual-form:

  • On one side, it features Mephistopheles, the dark and cunning demon spirit, with sharp facial features, flowing robes, and a powerful posture, symbolizing temptation, intellect, and manipulation.

  • On the reverse side, Margaretta (Gretchen) is depicted with gentle grace, her expression soft and innocent, clutching prayer beads, embodying purity, devotion, and tragedy.

This double-faced sculpture merges two complete personalities into one piece—demonstrating dualism, contrast, and human struggle between virtue and vice. The composition is both philosophically deep and technically remarkable, with precise micro-carving on both figures, making it an intellectual and visual masterpiece.
